Teething can be one of the most trying times for new parents, as your baby whines and fusses from the pain of emerging teeth breaking through the gums. Thankfully, there are some things you can do to help soothe your teething baby and make this time easier on everyone involved in the process.
If you’re at all familiar with baby teething, you know that it can be a trying time for both baby and parent. The discomfort is enough to make anyone’s teeth hurt! To help reduce baby’s pain during their first year, consider some of these tips.
Soothe them with pain relief
During baby teething, babies tend to be more fussy and cry more than usual. While teething pains can’t be completely avoided, they can be relieved using pain relief products such as baby ointments and toothpastes. Over-the-counter medications can also be used to help with other symptoms of teething such as fever or inflammation in a baby’s mouth.
Soothe them with calm music
There are plenty of ways to soothe a baby with teething. You can try massaging their gums, offering a cool washcloth to suck on, or even letting them hold an ice cube. While all of these methods are great at relieving pain, not all babies like these options. If you’re looking for something more calming than an ice cube but also more entertaining than rubbing their gums, try playing some calm music to distract them from their discomfort.
Soothe them with white noise
Babies can become irritable and fussy when they’re teething. If your baby is in pain, try playing a fan or white noise machine near him. This can help drown out other distracting noises. Make sure to talk with your pediatrician before trying any home remedies, though!
Give lots of cuddles
When a baby starts to get teeth, he may be a little cranky and want to spend some time in his cot. To help him feel better, there are several things you can do; many parents find that giving lots of cuddles helps. Just remember not to over-stimulate them with music or lights. It’s also important to keep up their fluid intake so they don’t dehydrate or have constipation issues.
Try gentle massage on their sore gums
A gentle massage with baby oil on a child’s sore gums can be a great way to ease their discomfort. Applying and rubbing gently will soothe their baby teeth and gums, making them feel less irritable. However, massaging too hard can cause soreness as well!
